After a thorough review of lens coatings, PENTAX applied HD Coating* — PENTAX’s latest multi-layer coating — to the lens. Compared to conventional multi-layer coatings, this high-performance, multi-layer coating reduces average reflectance in the visible light range by more than 50 percent and improves light transmittance, to minimize the adverse effects of flare and ghost images even in demanding lighting conditions such as backlighting. This zoom lens also incorporates an Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element to effectively compensate for chromatic aberration for extra-clear, high-contrast images.
* HD is the abbreviation of High Definition.
When mounted on a PENTAX digital SLR camera body, this zoom lens provides a 180-degree diagonal angle of view in the APS-C format at a focal length of 10mm to deliver eye-catching fish-eye images. Since the angle of view shifts dramatically with a slight change of focal length, the photographer can easily create visual expressions typical of an ultra-wide-angle lens, such as exaggerated perspective, deformed subjects and a pan-focus effect to capture the entire image field in focus.
SP (Super Protect) Coating, highly repellent to water, grease and dirt, has been applied to the lens’s front surface using a PENTAX-exclusive fluorine deposition process, making it easy to wipe off any stains such as fingerprints. This frees the photographer from worries in outdoor photography.
Based on the smc PENTAX-DA FISH-EYE 10-17mm F3.5-4.5ED[IF], which provided a maximum angle of view of 180 degrees and a distinctive image rendition, this fish-eye zoom lens is designed to deliver sharp, clear images with minimal flare and ghost images against backlight, thanks to a thorough review of all lens coatings and the application of high-grade, multi-layer HD Coating.
This lens features a new exterior design matching those of PENTAX K-series digital SLR cameras and the latest interchangeable lenses, and a removable lens hood. When mounted on a 35mm full-frame PENTAX K-series digital SLR camera, it lets you enjoy eye-catching fish-eye photography with a nearly circular image circle.
An angle of view of 180° (at focal length of 10 mm) opens up a world far beyond the human senses. With this lens, you can enjoy distinctive landscapes or starry sky pictures allowing you to take advantage of the image distortion that is unique to a fisheye lens. Further expression can also be achieved by approaching the subject and taking advantage of the distortion effect. Additionally the fish-eye effect can be control using the zoom, when the telephoto end turns to be a super wide-angle lens.
The lens is exclusively designed for PENTAX APS-C format, resulting in a compact and lightweight design fish-eye lens of a mere 323g. The excellent portability makes it easy to carry.
By adopting a demountable bayonet hood it is possible to shoot a nearly round fish-eye image using a full-frame K-series DSLR. The lens is designed to match the latest PENTAX DSLR cameras which is in line with the latest DA and D FA lens.
This lens delivers a high-resolution, high-contrast image that is sharp and clear even at the edges. Even under harsh conditions with a strong light source, HD Coating effectively reduces ghost and flare to minimum, compared to conventional multi-layer coatings.
In many of the PENTAX lenses, the front surface of the first optical element is treated with SP Coating, a high-strength fluorine coating which effectively protects the lens. Highly repellent to water and grease, it not only prevents adhesion of dust, water drops and oils, but also makes it easy to wipe away foreign objects from the lens surface.
Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass is used for providing superior correction for chromatic aberration which reduces imaging performance. This enables high-quality imaging performance without blurring of colors at the edges. Combined with the inner focus system, the lens provides a high image quality in a compact, lightweight design.
When in-focus using AF, turning the focus ring immediately switches to manual focus. This eliminates the need for switching from AF to MF allowing for smooth focusing.
The exterior features a wrinkle-finished surface, with meticulous attention paid to every detail. This totally redesigned body makes it a perfect match with the latest camera bodies and other lenses.
