Ricoh officially begins development of the next-generation GR camera
We’re excited to share that Ricoh has officially started development on the GR IV- the latest evolution in the iconic GR series. Built with street photographers and creative shooters in mind, the GR IV is designed to carry the legacy forward with a fresh new lens, upgraded sensor, and a completely new imaging engine. Think sharper images, faster performance, and more intuitive controls- all in that perfectly pocketable GR form factor.
What makes this even more exciting? Ricoh is also planning a special version of the GR IV that features the much-loved Highlight Diffusion Filter (HDF) for a softer, film-like aesthetic straight out of camera.

The GR series has always stood for simplicity, speed, and high-quality results. Over nearly 30 years, from the original film GR1 to the digital GR III, it's been a favourite for photographers who want to capture life as it happens, without compromise. The GR IV looks set to take that tradition to the next level.
Here’s what we know so far:
- New lens, sensor, and engine for next-level image quality
- Improved connectivity and a brand-new mobile app (GR WORLD)
- Expected launch: Autumn 2025
- HDF model: Coming shortly after, post-winter 2025
The current GR III will be phased out by July 2025 due to parts shortages, but the GR IIIx will remain available for now.
And if you happen to be in Tokyo, Beijing, or Shanghai — the GR IV design prototype will be on display starting May 31st at GR SPACE.
Stay tuned — we’ll be sharing more updates as we get them.
